c - Americas The original Hopi territory in the southwest encompassed some 225,000 sq. miles around villages established about this time.
c - Suryavarman II, Khmer ruler, dies.He commissioned the building of Angkor Wat, possibly the largest religious monument in the world. He traded elephant tusks, rhinoceros horns and kingfisher feathers for gold.
nov 11 - Hartbert, bishop of Utrecht 1140-1150, dies.

x - Iceland The first known fire and plague insurance was offered.
x - England War in Normandy.
sep 07 - Geoffrey Plantagenet, earl of Anjou/duke of Normandy, dies at 38.

feb 15 - Konrad III, Roman-German King r.1138-1152, dies at about 58.
mar 04 - Frederick Barbarossa was chosen as emperor and united the two factions which emerged in Germany after the death of Henry V.

feb 15 - Japan Taira Tadanori dies and Kiyomori rises to power in the Taira family.
mar 23 - Treaty of Konstanz between Frederik I Barbarossa and Pope Eugene III.
may 23 - Scotland David I, king of Scotland r.1124-1153, dies at about 68.

nov 11 - Sancho I, king of Portugal r.1185-1211, is born.
dec 08 - England Henry lands in England.
dec 19 - England Henry II of the Angevin dynasty was crowned King of England.

x - England Bridgnorth castle surrendered to Henry.
x - A map of western China was printed and is the oldest known printed map.
x - England Henry takes Scarborough Castle and Bridgnorth.
x - Master (Robert) Wace completes Roman de Brut, a version of Geoffrey of Monmouth Historia Regum Britanniaep.1136, in French. He dedicated his work to Eleanor of Aquitaine, the wife of Henry II, and is remembered as being the first writer to introduce the concept of the "Round Table" to the Arthurian cycle.
feb 28 - England Henry the Young King is born.
nov 11 - Alfonso VIII, the Noble One, king of Castilia, is born.

x - Henry captured Anjou.
x - The first foreign exchange contracts were issued and allowed the repayment of Genoese pounds debt with Byzantine bezants.
aug 10 - Japan The Hôgen disturbance Hôgen no Ran occurs in Kyôto; Minamoto Tameyoshi and Tametomo are attacked in the Shirakawa-den by Minamoto Yoshitomo and Taira Kiyomori.
aug 30 - Japan Tameyoshi and Tametomo are defeated.

x - The Bank of Venice issued the first government bonds to raise funds for was with Constantinople.

may 18 - Erik IX Helgi, The Saint, King of Sweden, dies.

x - Genghis Khan is born in the Hentiyn Nuruu mountains north of Ulan Bator. d.1227His given name was Temujin, "the ironsmith," and seized control over 5 million square miles that covered China, Iran, Iraq, Burma, Vietnam, and most of Korea and Russia.
