The papacy convened the Council to find a solution to the Great Schism 1378-1417, caused by the election of two rival popes, one in Avignon, France, the other in Rome. The Council's solution was to depose the two popes as heretics and elect a new pope, Alexander V. The schism continued, and Alexander dissolved the council.
