sep 09 - James IV, king of Scotland r.1488-1513, dies in battle at 40.
sep 13 - Balboa 'discovers' the Pacific Ocean after a trek across Panama.

apr 26 - Copernicus makes his 1st observations of Saturn.

x - William Tyndale completes his M.A. at Oxford and is ordained, but refuses to enter monastic orders.
jan 01 - Louis XII, "the Justified" king of France r.1498-1515, dies at 52.
jan 01 - François, Duke of Angoulˆme succeeds Louis XII as François I of France.
sep 22 - Anna van Kleef, queen of England/4th wife of Henry VIII, is born.
dec 24 - Thomas Wolsey appointed English Lord Chancellor.

x - Japan Môri Motonari defeats Takeda Motoshige near Koriyama (Aki).
x - Japan Hôjô Soun takes Arai Castle (Sagami) from Miura Yoshitatsu
x - Japan Asai Sukemasa breaks from the Rokkaku and establishes the Asai as an independent daimyo clan in northern Omi.
apr 10 - 1st ghetto, Jews are compelled to live in specific area of Venice.

x - The first conquistadors, under Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba d.c.1518, reached the Yucatan Peninsula.
mar 16 - The fifth Lateran Council ended. Begun in 1512, the council declares the pope superior to councils and approved severe papal censorship.

1518

x - Japan Amako Tsunehisa attacks Oûchi Yoshioki's outposts in Aki province.
x - Japan Hôjô Soun retires and is succeded by Hôjô Ujitsuna.
x - The second conquistadors expedition, under Juan de Grijalva d.1527, reached the Yucatan and explored the Mexican coast as far as the site of present-day Veracruz; from the Indians the members of this force heard of the magnificent empire of the Aztecs.
feb 03 - Pope Leo X ordered the Augustinian Order to discipline Martin Luther for his writings.
mar 05 - The Reformation Erasmus sends a copy of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses to Sir Thomas More.More was the Lord Chancellor of England during Henry VIII's schism with Rome.
mar 22 - Charles I grants Ferdinand Magellan generous funds to find spice islands which may lay on the spanish side of the undiscovered world. With the money the explorer was able to obtain five ships (possibly naos) called the Trinidad, the San Antonio, the Concepcion, the Victoria, and the Santiago.
mar 23 - The Reformation Martin Luther publishes his Luther's Asterisks Against Eck's Obelisk.
aug 08 - The Reformation Pope Leo X summoned Martin Luther to Rome to be questioned regarding his Ninety-Five Theses.
aug 31 - The Reformation Martin Luther published his Explanations of the Ninety-Five Theses attacking papal authority.
sep 12 - The Reformation Cardinal Cajetan began his questioning of Martin Luther at Augsburg.
oct 12 - The Reformation At Augsburg, Martin Luther began three days of questioning before the papal legate Cardinal Cajetan, but refuses to recant .
oct 20 - The Reformation Martin Luther escaped Augsburg on the threat of arrest by Cajetan.
nov 22 - The Reformation The faculty of Wittenberg University sends a letter to Frederick III stating their agreement with Martin Luther's views.
nov 28 - Martin Luther appealed to the Pope for a general council.
dec 00 - Frederick the Wise protects Luther from being handed over to Rome.

c - Cortés b.1469-d.1527, takes gold and chocolate back to Spain from Mexico.
x - The Reformation Martin Luther questions papal infallibility in a debate.
x - Cortés b.1469-d.1527 lands with 11 ships, about 600 men, 16 horses, and a few light cannon; he founds the town of Veracruz and proceeds inland to conquer the Aztecsu.1521
feb 10 - Mexico Defying Governor Velásquez's orders, Cortés leaves Cuba to conquer Mexico

dec 06 - Ferdinand Magellan's crew sights Brazil, but they steer his Spanish ships clear of the Portuguese territory.
dec 13 - Ferdinand Magellan's fleet anchor off the coast of present-day Rio de Janiero.
dec 18 - In a letter, Martin Luther denounced the Catholic doctrine of seven sacraments.
