jan 18 - Christian II of Denmark & Norway defeats Swedes at Lake Asunde.
feb 24 - On his twentieth birthday, Charles V was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope Leo X. Charles was to be the last emperor crowned by a pope.
mar 31 - Magellan's fleet decided to spend the winter in Patagonia. The area where they settled was called San Julian.
may 00 - Mexico Cort?s leaves Tenochtitlan to fight army brought by Panf?lo de Narv?ez
sum 00 - Magellan sends the Santiago on a reconnaissance mission down the coast to look for a passage to the other side of the continent.

jun 30 - Aztecs besieged Cort?s in Tenochtitlan; "la noche triste" The Night of Sadness, Cort?s retreated. The Spaniards suffer heavy losses leaving Tenochtitlan.

jun 30 - Montezuma II, the last Aztec emperor, killed.

aug 01 - Sigismund II Augustus, King of Poland r.1548-1572, is born.
aug 18 - Martin Luther publishes his Open Letter to the Christian Nobility, laying the groundwork for the Reformation.
aug la - Magellan decides moves the remaining four ships south to look for a passage.
sep 22 - Selim I, captured Baghdad/Sultan of Turkey r.1512-1520, dies at 53.
sep 30 - Suleiman I succeeds his father Selim I as sultan of Turkey.
oct 00 - Mexico Plague ravages Tenochtitlan
oct 00 - Magellan's fleet sight a strait and started through it. Magellan named it the strait of All Saints, but it later was named after him. The strait was a tricky passage that took the fleet 38 days to pass. During the passage, the captain of the San Antonio sailed his ship back toward Spain, taking with him most of the fleet's provisions.
oct 06 - Martin Luther published his Babylonian Captivity of the Church.
oct 07 - 1st public burning of books in Netherlands, in Louvain.
oct 15 - King Henry VIII of England orders bowling lanes at Whitehall.
oct 23 - King Carlos I crowned, German emperor Charles V.
nov 04 - Danish/Norwegian king Christian II crowned king of Sweden.
nov 09 - Swedish King Christian II executes 600 nobles.
nov 20 - Friesland hit by heavy hail storm.
nov 25 - Philipp Melanchthon, at the urging of Martin Luther and other Reformers, married Katharina Krapp, the daughter of the mayor of Wittenberg.
dec 00 - Mexico Cuitlahuac dies from smallpox.
dec 10 - The Reformation Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon burned the papal bull threatening excommunication for Luther and several books advocating the authority of the Pope on a bonfire. Luther was excommunicated less than a month later.

jan 00 - Magellan stops off at an island to feast on fish, crabs, and seabird eggs, but without fresh fruit and vegetables, scurvy still plagued the crew.
jan 28 - The Reformation The Diet of Worms opens. The meeting was convened to question Martin Luther on his writings.
feb 00 - Mexico Cuaht?moc becomes tlatoani or ruler of Tenochtitlan
mar 06 - Magellan discovers Guam.Magellan's crew stops in Guam and were able to supply the ships with food including fresh fruit, vegetables, and water.
mar 10 - Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, declared Martin Luther's writings were to be burned.
mar 16 - Magellan's fleet discovers Zamal (Samar).
mar 17 - Magellan lands on Homohon.
mar 17 - Ferdinand Magellan discovers the Philippines.
mar 31 - Ferdinand Magellan takes possession of Homohon, Archipelago of St Lazarus.
apr 02 - The Reformation Martin Luther begins his trip to Worms to the Imperial Diet where he had been summoned by the Church to be questioned about his writings.This journey was like a victory march. He was welcomed enthusiastically in all of the towns he went through. He preached in Erfurt, Gotha and Eisenach.
apr 07 - Ferdinand Magellan' fleet reaches Cebu.
apr 07 - The Reformation Inquisitor-general Adrian Boeyens bans Lutheran books.
apr 14 - Johannes Marbach is born.Marbach will champion Lutheranism in Strabourg and take an active role in the development of the Formula of Concord.
apr 16 - The Reformation Martin Luther arrives in Worms on and was cheered and welcomed by the people.As Martin Luther enters Worms to be questioned on his challenges to the Church, the Elector begs him not to enter, as his death has already been decided. Luther responds: "If there were as many devils at Vorms as tiles on its roofs, I would enter."
apr 17 - Martin Luther is excommunicated from Roman Catholic Church.
apr 18 - The Reformation At the Diet of Worms, Martin Luther refuses to recant his writings on Scripture, proclaiming: "Here I stand; I can do no otherwise. God help me. Amen!"
apr 18 - The Reformation Parliament of Worms: Cardinal Alexander questions Martin Luther.
apr 21 - Battle at Villalar: Emperor Charles I beats Communards.
apr 22 - French king Fran?ois I declares war on Spain.
apr 27 - Ferdinand Magellan, world traveler, killed by Filipino natives at 50.Magellan is involved in the natives' tribal warfare and is killed in battle. Sebastian del Cano took over the remaining three ships and 115 survivors. Because there were not enough men to crew three ships, del Cano had the Concepcion burned.
apr 28 - Treaty of Worms: Emperor Charles names his brother Ferdinand Arch duke of Neth-Austria.
may 00 - Mexico Spaniards besiege Tenochtitlan
may 00 - Mexico Spaniards cut off water to Tenochtitlan
may 08 - During the Diet of Worms, Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, made a secret pact with Pope Leo X to declare war on France.
may 08 - Parliament of Worms installs edict against Martin Luther.
may 12 - Henry VIII of England burned Martin Luther's writings in front of St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Henry later wrote: "If Luther will not be converted, let him and his writings be burned together."
may 20 - Ignatius Loyola seriously wounded by a cannon ball.
may 25 - Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, issued the Edict of Worms, condemning the Reformation and placing Martin Luther under a ban.
may 28 - Pope Leo X signs treaty with German emperor Charles V.
may 28 - Willem van Croij, duke of Soria, dies at about 62.
sum 00 - Cort?s, accompanied by thousands of Indian mercenaries, sacked and besieged Tenochtitlan. Their capital in ruins and their emperor dead, the Aztecs finally collapsed. Cortes named his conquest New Spain and sent out expeditions to extend Spanish power over the continent.
