x - A Dutch East India Company ship brings lacquer furniture to Holland, thus introducing a demand for it.
jan 07 - observes three bright little stars near Jupiter; by jan 15 he has figured out that there are four satellites of Jupiter.
mar - Galileo publishes Sidereus nuncius
apr - Johannes Kepler sends a letter in support of Galileo's discoveries. It is published in Prauge as "Conversation with the Sidereal Messenger".
jul - Galileo is appointed for life "Chief Mathematician of the University of Pisa and Philosopher and Mathematician to the Grand Duke" of Tuscany.
x - Galileo first observes the strange appearances of Saturn.
sep - Galileo moves from Padua to Florence.
x - Kepler verifies the existence of the satellites of Jupiter.
dec - Galileo verifies that Venus goes through phases like the Moon. This falsifies the Ptolemaic System and shows that Venus goes around the Sun, in conformance with the Copernican System.
