-Between 1865 and 1890 the rates on freight trains dropped and services rose from 10 billion ton-miles to 72 billion.
-Henry Christopher Mance [b.1840-d.1926] of British Army Signal Corps, builds a heliograph, an optical sunlight-based signalling device.
-Arrest of editorial board of Irish People.
-James Stephens arrested; later escapes from jail.
-The telegraph links India and Europe. Message can be telegraphed from London to Bombay in less then 4 minutes
-Pneumatic tube networks built in Berlin, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester
-International Telegraph Union (ITU), later renamed to International Telecommunication Union, is born in Paris at a conference involving delegates from 20 countries. The ITU determines rules and standards for international communications
-The first fax is sent from Lyon to Paris
