x - Captain James Buchanan Eads finishes the bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis. Using steel supplied by Andrew Carnegie, Eads incorporates a triple arch design. The construction amazes the engineering world; Eads will be the first American engineer to be awarded the Albert Medal of the Royal Society of Arts in London.
x - Hawaii signs a ten year free trade agreement with the USA to give it access to the U.S. sugar market.
x - Automatic telegraph linking 4-6 sending/receiving apparata to a single line, invented in France by Jean Maurice Baudot

1875
mar 01 - Congress approves the Civil Rights Act guaranteeing equal rights to black Americans in public accommodations and jury duty. The act will be invalidated by the Supreme Court in 1883.
mar 03 - Blanche Kelso Bruce (Rep) of Mississippi took his seat in the United States Senate. He would become the first African-American to serve a full six-year term. Not until 1969 did another black American begin a Senate term.
