24 - British Mandate over Palestine goes into effect (lasts 28 years).
26 - H Shapley & H D Curtis hold "great debate" on nature of nebulae.
26 - Srinivasa Ramanujan, Indian math genius (?/Notebooks), dies at 32.
27 - Pogrom leader Petljoera declares Ukraine Independence.
28 - Azerbaijan SSR joins USSR (1st time).

00 - Samuel Gompers debates Kansas Governor Henry J. Allen over industrial court law.

01 - Brooklyn Dodgers tie Boston Braves, 1-1, in 26 innings.

02 - 1st game of National Negro Baseball League played in Indianapolis.

08 - 46th Kentucky Derby: Ted Rice aboard Paul Jones wins in 2:09.
10 - John Wesley Hyatt, inventor/plastics pioneer, dies.
11 - William D Howells, US author (A Woman's Reason), dies at 83.
14 - Giants inform Yankees that the lease allowing them to play in the Polo Grounds will not be renewed at end of 1920 season.
14 - Wash Senator Walter Johnson wins his 300th game vs Detroit.
16 - Spanish bullfighter Joselito is fatally gored fighting his last bull.
16 - Joan of Arc (Jean D'arc) canonized a saint.
17 - Maitland Hathorn, cricketer (325 runs in 12 Tests S Afr 1901-11), dies.
19 - The Battle of Matewan. Strife between coal mine operators and miners attempting to be organized by the United Mine Workers comes to a head with a pitched gun battle in the streets of Matewan, West Virginia. Twelve people, mostly men from the detective agency hired by coal operators to stop the organizing, are killed.
20 - USAPolitics The Socialist Party nominates Eugene V. Debs for president, and he is the first candidate to mount a campaign from jail. Beginning in September he is permitted to issue weekly public statements that are then circulated by the party. He runs on the slogan, "From the Prison to the White House," and polls 3.5 percent of the vote.
20 - Policemen raid the Cubs' bleachers and arrest 24 fans for gambling.
23 - Pope Benedictus XV publishes encyclical Pacem Dei.
27 - Tatar ASSR forms in Russian SFSR.

04 - Peace of Trianon between Allies & Hungary.
05 - 1st rivet driven on Bank of Italy headquarters at 1 Powell.
05 - A's VP Thomas Shibe denies charges that baseballs are livelier.
06 - Gen Wrangel opens offensive against red Army.
08 - Reds' Edd Roush falls asleep in center during long infield argument Heinie Groh goes to wake him, but ump ejects Roush for delay of game.
11 - Republicans nominate Warren G Harding for president.
