02 - Earthquake hits Palestine.
10 - Kevin O'Higgins, Irish Free State VP, assassinated.
16 - Augusto Sandino begins 5 year war against US occupation of Nicaragua.
27 - Major Bernard Montgomery (29) marries widow Betty Carver.
29 - Bellevue Hospital in NY installs 1st iron lung.

August

01 - Earliest date for a film to be considered for the Academy Awards.
03 - Governor Fuller of Massachusetts refuses to grant clemency to Sacco & Vanzetti. On aug 19 1927 their final appeal to the state's Supreme Court is rejected.
04 - Peace Bridge between US & Canada opens.
07 - US rum smuggler Horace Alderman kills 3.

12 - Paramount's aviation epic Wings, starring the "It" girl Clara Bow, premieres. The film was a smashing success, earning $3.8 million, and later winningthe first Academy Award for best picture (then called the award for "Most Outstanding Production").
23 - After a seemingly endless string of appeals and special commissions, Sacco & Vanzetti are executed in the electric chair at Massachusetts' Charlestown Prison despite the nov 08 1925 confession to the crime by Celestino Madeiros, who was also executed.Sacco & Vanzetti are cleared by proclamation in 1977

07 - Philo Farnsworth demonstrates 1st use of TV in SF.
17 - Charles Lindbergh visits San Francisco.
22 - Dempsey fails in rematch against Tunney for heavyweight crown in 10.Famous "Long count" fight
29 - Telephone service begins between US & Mexico.
29 - Tornado strikes St Louis Missouri, 85 die.
30 - Ruth hits 60 home runs in a season, breaking his own six-year-old record of 59.

06 - Al Jolson stars in The Jazz Singer, first talking film, premieres in New York City.
08 - Sea battle at Navarino.Greece freed of Ottoman occupation.
08 - NY Yankees sweep Pirates in 24th World Series.
27 - Fox Movietone News first sound news film in New York
27 - Queen Wilhelmina opens Meuse-Waal Canal in Nijmegen.
28 - KLM-plane "Homing Pigeon" leaves Neth-Indies after 1st regular flight.

12 - 1st underwater tunnel, Holland Tunnel connecting NY to NJ opens.
12 - Trotsky expelled from Soviet CP; Stalin becomes undisputed dictator.
12 - Notre Dame's Fighting Irish changes blue jerseys for green.
14 - Pennsylvania Worlds largest gas tank in Pittsburgh explodes; 28 die.
17 - Adolf A Joffe, Russian author/diplomat, commits suicide at 44.
17 - Tornado hits Washington DC.
22 - New York City, Gershwin's Funny Face premiers
22 - 1st snowmobile patent granted to Carl Eliason (Sayner Wisc).
30 - Helen Hayes stars in Cowuette on Broadway
