JANUARY

01 - Japanese and Chinese forces clash on the Manchukuo border.
08 - |Spain ?| Anarchist uprisings in Saragossa, Seville, Bilbao and Madrid.
30 - Adolf Hitler ?+ becomes Chancellor of Germany.

FEBRUARY

21-24 - Japan claims Jehol Province for Manchukuo. China rejects the associated ultimatum.
22 - |Germany ?| 40,000 SA and SS men are sworn in as auxiliary police.
24 - German police raid the national headquarters of the Communist Party in Berlin.
27 - Burning of the German Reichstag, or parliament. Hitler ?+ calls it a Communist plot. Special police powers are granted to the Nazi-controlled Prussian police. 4,000 critics of the Nazis are arrested.
28 - |Spain ?| Gil Robles forms the Catholic Party (CEDA).
28 - President Hindenburg suspends constitutional rights and emergency powers granted to Adolf Hitler as a result of the Reichstag fire. Communist Reichstag members are arrested. Communist civil servants in Prussia are arrested.

04 - The 200,000 Chinese defenders of Jehol are defeated by 50,000 Japanese troops.
05 - The Nazis and Nationalists win a majority in the German elections.

22 - Nazis open Dachau concentration camp near Munich, to be followed by Buchenwald near Weimar in central Germany, Sachsenhausen near Berlin in northern Germany, and Ravensbrück for women.
23 - The Enabling Act is passed by German Parliament giving Hitler ?+ dictatorial power for four years.
27 - Japan withdraws from the League of Nations +, effective in two years.

APRIL

11 - Nazis issue a decree defining a non-Aryan as "anyone descended from non-Aryan, especially Jewish, parents or grandparents. One parent or grandparent classifies the descendant as non-Aryan...especially if one parent or grandparent was of the Jewish faith."

26 - |Germany| The Gestapo is born, created by Hermann Göring in the German state of Prussia.

02 - Nazi storm troopers occupy trade union offices nationwide. The Labor Movement was absorbed by the Nazi German Labor Front. Socialist labor leaders are arrested.
10 - Germany bans all socialist political parties, and confiscates the property holdings of trade unions and the Social Democratic Party.

30 - The League of Nations + condemns Germany's treatment of the Jews.
